ABOUT MEDocument designerMy first job out of school was as a typist in the Australian Public Service in 1983. Back then they had typing pools, and Courier was the only font we used! I trained as a word processing operator (more fonts!) and later became a supervisor.
When typing pools were phased out I became a branch typist and also took on admin tasks, including database management and conference organisation. My first experience designing documents was in 1992 when I worked on the set of 12 Ecologically Sustainable Development reports. I fell in love with document design and eventually left the public service in 1997 to set up my own business—DP Plus. I went on to do reports for a number of government departments, including multi-volume inquiry and Royal Commission reports. I also prepared conference handbooks and proceedings for a conference organiser for 20 years. These days I still use MS Word for preparing print-ready documents—they're just a bit fancier! EditorAfter working with a group of editors in 1992, I took on freelance editing and proofreading work for Biotext. The experience there translated to more interesting jobs in the public service. As office manager for the Horticultural Policy Council for three years, I was responsible for production of all their publications—from typing to formatting to proofreading to liaising with designers and printers. Following that I produced documents for an international conference.
Since 2015 I have been editing and proofreading fiction—for Tule Publishing, Shannon Curtis, Keri Arthur, Mel A Rowe, Robyn Chalmers, Donna Maree Hanson/Dani Kristoff and Mia Vincy, among others. You can find the full list in my portfolio. |
